  1. I really liked all of these layouts, and it amazes me what people can do! Some of them don't seem like they are done with grids and columns in InDesign (maybe that's because I'm such an amateur at using it). I think magazine and publication design is the most interesting and fun because you can do almost anything with it.

It's really hard to pick just one, so a couple of my favorite layouts on this site were the grunge magazine layout, creative and fun publication spread and beauty product magazine layout.

I liked the grunge layout simply because of the design work. The elements on the page are still laid out really nicely, even though it's supposed to look like a mess. All of the words are legible and headlines are bold and great. The colors were also intelligently chosen to match the grunge theme.

The creative and fun publication is just that: creative and fun. I love how some of the colors aren't on the image and it shows someone painting in the lines. Even part of her eye is left uncolored. That looks SO cool! It gives you the feeling that this artwork was hand done and really had some hard work put into it. I usually don't like it when stories or headlines are hyphenated, but it is necessary and works here so the text doesn't overlap onto the imagery. I loved this one.

The beauty product magazine spread was nice because you can tell very easily that grids and columns were used to show and explain the different shades of lipstick. This makes it pleasing to the eye and very legible. It gives the eye that Z pattern that is typical in a lot of publication design.

    Thanks for this article, Ben.

  2. Ben,

Thank you for this article! I truly enjoyed the variety of layouts given throughout the article because with the variety, it is easier to connect with a large audience depending on which layout best speaks to them.

I also loved the variety of layout designs because of their ability to personally emphasize one particular aspect of the article they are combined with.

With such a vast collection of layout designs, I found that my personal favorite designed tended to be the photography emphasized layouts. Why? I think that visual emphasis creates a bigger empathetic picture and therefore a bigger impact on the reader when combined with the proper text upon reading. Which, makes the entire piece more effective overall.
